SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Tournament officials today announced that 2010 champions Mark O'Meara and Nick Price, along with the teams of Brad Faxon-Jeff Sluman and John Cook-Joey Sindelar, are among the first wave of commitments received by the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf. All three pairs will compete in the 54-hole Legends Division, which awards official money and Charles Schwab Cup points, when the 35th annual event returns to the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa on April 16-22, 2012.
Two-time major champion O'Meara and World Golf Hall of Fame member Price will join forces in Savannah for the fifth consecutive year. The duo is looking forward to the return to both Savannah and team competition, said Price in a recent interview. "It's a special event for all of us. A fun week and you don't quite have the same amount pressure because you have a partner, so it allows you to free wheel it a little more. Of course, if you can get out there and ham and egg it like we did two years ago, it makes the week even better."
Price has always enjoyed the Lowcountry hospitality and says the Westin serves as an ideal venue for the Champions Tour's only official all-team event, "It's just a really wonderful facility and a great spot for the guests of Liberty Mutual and the players and their wives. They love going over the river to all the great restaurants. It's certainly one of our best events on the Champions Tour."
Eight-time PGA TOUR winner Faxon will team with 1988 PGA Championship winner Sluman for his first appearance at the event. Faxon had a strong rookie season on the 2011 Champions Tour, earning a title at the Insperity Championship in Houston. Sluman, who has four Champions Tour and six PGA TOUR wins, paired with Craig Stadler in his four previous starts in Savannah.
Former Ohio State teammates Cook and Sindelar will pair again for the fifth year. After three consecutive top-10 finishes together including runner-up in 2010, the duo were undoubtedly one to watch last year until Sindelar pulled a muscle in his back and the team withdrew after the first round. Cook is an 11-time winner on the PGA TOUR with eight Champions Tour titles, his partner has seven PGA TOUR victories.
The Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf will be televised by the Golf Channel and CBS. Golf Channel will provide live coverage on Friday from 12:30-2:30 p.m. ET while CBS will televise the weekend's play live from 1-3 p.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday.
