Tiger Woods isn't the only one playing a Fall Series event for the first time. Ernie Els has never played in one either -- until this week. Without so much as a top-10 this season, Els has struggled mightily in what's been his worst season on the PGA TOUR in an otherwise distinguished career.
Els has even switched to a long putter in an effort to turn his season around. It hasn't worked., though, as the World Golf Hall of Famer has just five top-25s this season.
Justin Leonard, on the other hand, has played in three of the four Frys.com Opens --- tying for 24th a year ago when the tournament debuted at CordeValle Golf Club. He also tied for sixth in 2007 and 13th in 2009 when the tournament was held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale.
Leonard, whose last of 12 PGA TOUR victories came in 2008, has four top-25 finishes this year but he's yet to finish 10th or higher. The 1997 British Open champ ranks 138th on the PGA TOUR money list and is making a push to finish in the all-exampt top 125.
As for Angel Cabrera, he hasn't played on TOUR since the Wyndham Championship, where he missed the cut. It was the fourth straight start that sent Cabrera home early.
Like Els, the Argentine has never played in a Fall Series event. In 15 starts, Cabrera has missed the cut nine times and has just two top-10s.
