First Round News & Notes
The Champions Tour team of Mark Calcavecchia and Nick Price and the PGA TOUR team of rookies Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele share the first-round lead at the 23rd annual Franklin Templeton Shootout. The teams each posted 9-under-par 63s in the modified-alternate shot format.
The team of Bradley and Steele certainly had the day's best finish. After Bradley drained a 30-foot putt for a bogey on No. 9, the pair played the last eight holes 7-under-par, including six consecutive birdies to close out their round. Both are making their first appearances in the tournament and each won PGA TOUR events for the first time in 2011. Steele captured the Valero Texas Open, while Bradley claimed the PGA Championship and the HP Byron Nelson Championship.
Since the event moved to the Tiburon Golf Club in 2001, the opening-round scores posted by Calcavecchia/Price and Bradley/Steele matched the best opening round score set in 2004 by Steve Flesch/ Justin Leonard and later matched by five other teams, most recently by the teams of Ian Poulter/Dustin Johnson and Jerry Kelly/Steve Stricker in 2010.
Poulter and Johnson, the 2010 champions, are not participating in this year's tournament. Johnson is sidelined following right knee surgery last month, while Poulter is competing at the Dubai World Championship this week.
Calcavecchia is playing with his 11th different partner in this tournament, teaming up with Price this year. This is Calcavecchia's 17th appearance in the Shootout, second only to host Greg Norman, who is playing for the 22nd time.
Price made just the second hole-in-one in tournament history when he aced No. 12 with a 4-iron from 213 yards. Tim Clark had the other also on No. 12 in the final round in 2010. This was Price's first ace in competition since the 1997 NEC World Series of Golf.
Calcavecchia and Price are both coming off a lengthy trip to South Africa where they competed in the Nedbank Senior Challenge which was won by Calcavecchia by one stroke over Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam. Price finished T4.
Players representing six different countries teed it up on Friday. In addition to the United States, the other countries represented were Australia, Colombia, South Africa, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.
The new faces playing in this tournament include Bradley, Jason Dufner, Sean O'Hair, Webb Simpson, Steele, Bo Van Pelt and Jhonnattan Vegas. Only seven players have been on a winning team in their first start in the tournament. That list includes Mark O'Meara (1989), Curtis Strange (1989), Fred Couples (1990), Scott McCarron (1997), Hank Kuehne (2003), Rod Pampling (2006) and Woody Austin (2007).
The format for Saturday's second round will be Better-Ball followed by a Scramble format on Sunday.
The winning team will split $750,000.
The Franklin Templeton Shark Shootout 5K race will get underway at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning. The race will begin and end at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, adjacent to the course.
Saturday's second round will be televised live on NBC Sports from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
