MORE INTERVIEWS: Crowne Plaza Invitational transcript archive

Q. Rickie Fowler makes the turn at 1 under par. Then some other dude showed up and started playing golf. Rickie, what happened out there?

RICKIE FOWLER: I'm playing well right now. I came off last week sick. I started to feel well on Friday and did the same thing at TPC. I brought some momentum this week. Finally turned things on at the end.

Q. I mean eagle at the first hole from 21 feet, did you feel like when that putt went in, oh, there it is, got it?

RICKIE FOWLER: Possibly. I just hit a good drive, hit a good second shot. I have been rolling it well lately. I had a lot of good putts. I just gave myself a lot of opportunities. I just happened to make some good putts on the back 9.

Q. Seven birdies in his final nine holes, why do you think that is?

RICKIE FOWLER: The golf course is in good shape, the greens are really receptive, and they are rolling well. I got out there.

Q. A 29 on the front for Rickie Fowler, that was your back, let's talk about the 4 at No. 9, what was going well with you?

RICKIE FOWLER: Just piecing the round together really well. Got off to a slow start on the front 9, my back 9, made a couple of birdies and bogeys. I made the turn. Made the eagle at one and got things rolling. I started to put myself in play and make some birdies. The greens are great out here at Colonial.

Q. What happened on the final hole, what did you hit for your second shot?

RICKIE FOWLER: I had 125 to the hole, water short left hand right. I was trying to hit it passed the hole to give myself a look at birdie but I miss hit it a little bit, and I wasn't planning to hit far enough. I hit it a little bit left, actually pin high, got a little bit of a tough kick to it, left it in the water, made double. It's a sorrow way to finish the round, but I hit it really well, putted well. 29 with a double is not too bad.

Q. Did you know where you were, did you have 60 on your mind?

RICKIE FOWLER: I had 60, 59. But like I said, I was trying to hit it behind the hole to give myself a look. I was playing well, putting well.

Q. 63 with a double is not bad, is it?

RICKIE FOWLER: A double, and I two putted from six feet on 16. I can't stress it enough, I'm playing well.

Q. 63 is great, good luck tomorrow.

---

Q. Rickie, a really tough finish on that last hole but a great opening round?

RICKIE FOWLER: Yes, I mean, you know, it's not always fun to finish with a double. I was playing well out there, hitting the ball well and rolling it really well. It's a sorrow way to finish, but I'm excited about moving on to tomorrow. I like this course a lot. It's been good to me. I won the Hogan award here. Colonial and Crowne Plaza has been great to me. I'm excited to be playing well this week and kind of draw off the good out there today. 63 to start off with is pretty awesome.

Q. When you get in a groove like that, it just happens?

RICKIE FOWLER: Yes, I did a similar thing last week at THE PLAYERS. I was sick early in the week. I went into Friday, and I made the turn, and I was a little ways out of it. I got on a run there. I have been playing well lately and it's a matter of time before things start to click. I got things going last week on my final 9. I missed the cut by one. The same thing here, got things clicking. I'm excited to move on.

Q. 18, a bad lie, distance there? (Inaudible.)

RICKIE FOWLER: Yes, my last hole there on 9 I miss hit it a little bit. I was ultimately trying to hit it passed the hole. I should have been trying to play it 3, 4, five yards further. It's pin high just a little left, it had water over there, to walk away with double. It's a little bit rough to finish the round that way, but I was playing well and putting the ball well.

Q. Did you draw on some of the other guys because they all wanted to score well out here, you kept right up there with them?

RICKIE FOWLER: I know some of the older guys like to play here. It's a course where distance isn't a huge factor. They are able to hang around. And to get on these greens you have a chance for birdies. It brings everyone together, and I am looking forward to moving on, and I am playing well right now.

Q. Have you ever had a 29 with a double before?

RICKIE FOWLER: I don't think I had it with a double, no. But it was fun.

Q. Did you try to go for the record there on tat second shot, are you playing a wedge shot aggressive?

RICKIE FOWLER: Well, it wasn't that I was playing aggressive, I was trying to hit it past the hole and that's why I miss hit it. I hit it pin high. If I would have hit it how I wanted to it, it would have flew a couple of yards past the hole, and with the miss hit, obviously brings the water into play. It's just unfortunate to make a bad swing.
