The Playoffs begin now ... for some.
We're still a week away from the official start to the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup but for those players on the bubble do-or-die time begins this week at the Wyndham Championship. Only the top 125 in the FedExCup standings following this week's event will be eligible to compete in the Playoffs opener: The Barclays.
Last year, Scott Piercy was the only player to move inside the 125-man cut line at the Wyndham Championship, preventing Jeff Quinney from moving up and taking the spot previous No. 124 Chris Stroud surrendered.
At the 2009 Wyndham Championship, Kevin Stadler tied for second and moved from 133rd to 76th in the final Regular Season standings. David Mathis, Chris Riley, Todd Hamilton and Jeff Maggert each moved inside the top 125 in the standings after posting top-25 finishes in Greensboro.
In 2007 and 2008, 144 players qualified for the Playoffs. In those two years, a total of eight players moved inside the top 144 during the final event of the Regular Season. Had the cut line been at No. 125, only two players in each season would have made their way into the Playoffs.
In the four years of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, the highest-ranked player to fall out of the postseason at the Wyndham Championship was Heath Slocum in 2009. Slocum, who entered the Regular Season finale at No. 117 in the standings, was one of an all-time high of five players to be knocked out in the season's final week.
Slocum is again on the bubble this week -- currently 121st in the standings -- and is one of a slew of Playoffs veterans on the bubble this week.
