Jul. 25, 2010

Weather: Mostly cloudy and breezy with highs in the mid-60s. Winds were from the WNW at 12-18 mph.

• Final Results: 1 -- Bernhard Langer (-5); 2 -- Corey Pavin (-4); T3 -- Jay Don Blake/Russ Cochran/Fred Funk/Peter Senior (-1); 7 -- Trevor Dodds (Even).

• Bernhard Langer held off a Sunday charge by 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin to win a one-stroke victory over Pavin. Langer started the day with a three-stroke advantage on Pavin and built it to four after seven holes. However, consecutive bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9 cut the lead to two at the turn. Pavin's birdie at No. 11 pulled him within one, but the turning point came at No. 15 when Langer had a two-putt birdie from 35 feet and Pavin made bogey after each had birdied No. 14. Langer maintained his margin until No. 18. When Pavin missed his birdie opportunity, Langer just needed to two putt for a bogey and the one-stroke victory.

• With his win, Langer is victorious for the third time in 2010 and now has 11 career victories in just 57 starts. This was his first major title and he earns a check for $315,600 and a berth in next year's British Open at Royal St. George's in Sandwich.

• By picking up double points with his win, Bernhard Langer moves in front of Fred Couples in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup race. Couples, who did not play in this event, led coming in with 1,433 points, but Langer's 631 points moved him from fourth place into first with 1,449, a margin of just 16 points going to next week's U.S. Senior Open at Sahalee.

• With the check for $315,600, Langer goes over the $1 million mark in season earnings for the third consecutive year. He has now earned $1,240,112 and is second behind Fred Couples ($1,327,092) on the current money list.

• With the win, Langer became the first non-American player to win this tournament since Noboru Sugai did so in 2002 when it was an unofficial tournament.

• This was also Langer's second European Senior Tour victory. He won the 2008 Casa Serena Open.

• Players from 10 different countries have now won this event with Langer's victory.

• Australian Peter Senior, the medalist at last fall's Champions Tour's National Qualifying Tournament, continues to enjoy a productive rookie season. Senior closed with a 3-under-par 68 on Sunday to move from T17 to T3. Senior earned $89,930 to push his 2010 earnings to $495,919 which closes him in on fully-exempt status for 2011.

• Another player making noise this year is Jay Don Blake. Although he has limited exempt status as a past PGA TOUR tournament winner, Blake has four top-10 finishes this year with Sunday's T3 his best showing. He has already earned $267,796 this year, surpassing last year's total of $208,933.

• Champions Tour player Mark Wiebe was competing in this week's Senior British Open (T ) but he certainly was keeping an eye on things thousands of miles away at the HealthONE Colorado Open at the Green Valley Ranch GC in Denver. Wiebe's son Gunner was T2 after 54 holes and trailed by one stroke prior to Sunday's final round. Gunner competes for the University of San Diego and qualified for the PGA TOUR's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

• Sunday's low round was turned in by Tom Lehman, who finished with a 4-under-par 67, one better than Peter Senior. With more difficult conditions on Sunday, there were just five rounds in the 60s. One of those was by David Peoples, who shaved 11 strokes off his Saturday round of 80.

• Close finishes have become the norm in this tournament. Since it became an official event in 2003, there have been five playoffs and three others have been decided by one stroke.

• Trevor Dodds had his first top-10 finish as a Champions Tour player. Dodds closed with a 1-under-par 70 to finish seventh.

Randy Haag from the United States, the lone amateur to make the cut, finished T41. Haag is one of the top amateur players in Northern California and is a three-time NCGA Player of the Year.
