Both co-leaders D.A. Weibring and Tom Lehman made birdies on No. 18 to grab a share of the first-round lead. However, a total of 25 players are within three shots of the lead heading into tomorrow's second round.
This marks the first time Weibring has led or shared the lead after the opening round since the 2006 Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. He held sole possession of the lead at that event after his opening-round 64 and eventually finished T7. Weibring has been battling physical issues the last couple of years and has been troubled by a bone spur in his left shoulder.
A total of 36 players in the 66-man field posted sub-par rounds and 20 players posted rounds in the 60s and the opening-round scoring average was 71.894. A year ago, there were 18 rounds in the 60s on Thursday and 32 sub-par rounds with a field average of 72.000.
Bob Gilder, who opened with a 4-under-par 68, made his 161st consecutive start for events he has been eligible for on Thursday and he also played in his 46th consecutive major championship on the Champions Tour. That is the longest current streak in that category.
The most difficult hole on Thursday was No. 17 with a scoring average of 3.288 (+.288), while No. 16 was the easiest at 4.788 (-.212). The only three players to make a birdie on No. 17 were Fred Funk, Allen Doyle and Weibring.
Fred Funk, Bob Gilder, Bruce Vaughan, Mark James and Tom Jenkins all posted bogey-free rounds.
The day's odd scorecard belonged to Phil Blackmar, who had nine pars and nine bogeys.
Jeff Sluman led all players with just 23 putts in the first round. Sluman had 13-one putts in his round, including eight on the back nine.
Corey Pavin and Bob Gilder had the lone eagles of the day on the No. 10 and No. 6, respectively.
Bernhard Langer, who is bidding for a third consecutive major title in 2010, opened with a 3-under-par 69 and is T8. Langer won the Senior British Open and the U.S. Senior Open in consecutive weeks last month.
Brad Bryant, Morris Hatalsky and Tom Watson hit 14 of 14 fairways in Thursday's round.
Tom Purtzer had the day's long drive, a 347-yarder on No. 11. It was just a yard shy of his longest drive in 2010, a 348-yarder in the final round at The Principal Charity Classic. Olin Browne owns the longest drive in 2010. Browne had a 358-yard drive in the first round of The ACE Group Classic.
Defending champion Mike Reid opened with a 7-over-par 79 and is currently 65th.
