Power Rankings: Deutsche Bank Championship

Aug. 30, 2010
By Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy Columnist

After a handful of appearances atop my Power Rankings, it was nice to see Matt Kuchar (finally) get his at The Barclays. The law of averages bumps him from the top this week, but I'm hardly sour, as you see below.

Statistically, the par-71 TPC Boston is one of the easiest tracks tee-to-cup on the schedule. The large greens run at 11.5 on the Stimpmeter and the rough is a manageable three-and-a-half inches. The Deutsche Bank Championship would be yet another shootout unless wind defends the course. Well, guess what -- that's precisely what the forecast suggests throughout the tournament.

The only threat of precipitation is for the opener on Friday, but as the energy enters and departs, winds could blow steadily as high as 20 mph during the peak of the system.

Damp tracks favor long hitters, but we still have to hedge towards the guys that hit lots of greens in regulation and make tons of birdies this week. Depending on if/when the rain actually falls, one side of the draw could benefit.

JOHNSON
The unflappable Johnson led the the field in distance off the tee and greens hit en route to a T9 at The Barclays. Ranks 175th on TOUR in final-round scoring average, but closed out a T4 at last year's Deutsche Bank with a bogey-free 66.
Steve
STRICKER
The defending champ has a tremendous record here: T7 (2006), T9 (2007), T13 (2008). Finished T3 at The Barclays, where he was T6 in greens and had a field-low four bogeys. Third in the all-around, fourth in putting and sixth in birdie average.
Matt
KUCHAR
En route to his victory at Ridgewood, he was T15 in greens hit, sixth in putting and T2 in birdies. Played his final 25 holes in bogey-free 10-under. Placed T15 here last year. Leads in FedExCup Points, earnings and all-around.

DAY
Trending in a big way. Chased his T22 at Firestone with a T10 at Whistling Straits and a T5 at Ridgewood. Ranked a brutal 68th in fairways at The Barclays, but T6 in greens in regulation. Placed T19 at the 2009 Deutsche Bank Championship.
Ben
CRANE
Ranked inside top 25 in all major relevant stats while finishing T12 at The Barclays. Leads the PGA TOUR in birdies or better on par 4s, ranks second in the all-around and 16th in birdie average. Finished T10 at TPC Boston in 2008.
Angel
CABRERA
One of the scant few on which I rely more on course history as a predicator. Rare appearance in this feature, but comes off a T15 at The Barclays and has a sparkling record at TPC Boston -- T23 (2007), T15 (2008), T4 (2009).
Adam
SCOTT
This is the site of his PGA TOUR breakthrough victory in 2003. Placed T9 at The Barclays, where he ranked T6 in greens in regulation, 10th in putting and T2 in birdies. Enters 19th on TOUR in the all-around and seventh in greens.
Jim
FURYK
Fell five spots to eighth in FedExCup points as a result of his DNP at The Barclays. Finished T8 at last year's Deutsche Bank, where he ranked fourth in both greens hit and birdies. Was T7 here in 2008.
Ryan
PALMER
Since his equipment adjustment, he's posted two top fives in three starts, including a T5 at The Barclays, where he was T15 in greens and T2 in birdies. Ranks fifth on TOUR in birdies or better on par 4s and 21st in birdie average.
Padraig
HARRINGTON
While he finished T4 at last year's Deutsche Bank (T12 - greens; T11 - birdies) during a torrid run, he sneaks into this feature with a chip on his shoulder. He was a Ryder Cup Captain's Pick based on reputation, so he's motivated to illustrate why.
