CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In a stunner on Friday, Tiger Woods shot a 79 during the second round of the Quail Hollow Championship to miss the cut by eight strokes. The early exit was just the sixth of Woods' professional career, a span of 241 starts that began in 1996.

Here are a few nuggets that demonstrate just how shocking -- and rare -- this was.

Tiger's missed cuts ... and his responses
Tiger has missed six TOUR cuts as a pro. Here's a look at each one, and how he performed in subsequent starts.
Year Tournament Rd. 1 Rd. 2 Total Score Finish
1997 Bell Canadian Open 70 76 146 6 over Tied for 75th
How he responded: Finished T-26 in his next start six weeks later, the Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic and didn't post his next top-10 finish until next season when he tied for second at the season-opening 1998 Mercedes Championships.
2005 EDS Byron Nelson Championship 69 72 141 1 over Tied for 77th
How he responded: A tie for third at the Memorial, starting a string of seven consecutive starts in which he finished T4 or better. Including in that stretch was a win at the British Open
2005 FUNAI Classic at Walt Disney World 68 73 141 3 under Tied for 103rd
How he responded: A second-place finish at the THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola, the final event of the season.
2006 U.S. Open 76 76 152 12 over Tied for 82nd
How he responded: Tied for second in his next start, the Cialis Western Open, then reeled off six straight wins -- including two majors, the British Open and PGA Championship -- to end the season.
2009 British Open 71 74 145 5 over Tied for 74th
How he responded: Victories in each of his next two starts (Buick Open, World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational). In all, he made seven starts to finish the year after missing the cut in Turnberry, and he finished first or second six times en route to winning the FedExCup.
2010 Quail Hollow Championship 74 79 153 9 over T140
How will he respond?: His next start is THE PLAYERS Championship next week. He won at TPC Sawgrass in 2001 but has just one top-10 finish in his seven subsequent starts at the event (eighth place last year). Can he fix his game at a course that hasn't been very kind to him?

MORE TIGER NOTES

• Tiger had back-to-back double bogeys on No. 14 and No. 15 on Friday. The only other time as a professional he recorded consecutive doubles or worse was the 2007 Arnold Palmer Invitational when he had a double bogey followed by a triple bogey at Nos. 17-18 in the fourth round. He also recorded a double bogey followed by a quadruple bogey at the 1996 U.S. Open as an amateur.

• Tiger matched his worst nine-hole score of 43, which he turned in three other times:(round four, 2007 Arnold Palmer Invitational; round two, 1996 TOUR Championship and round one, 1996 U.S. Open as an amateur).

• Tiger's 79 on Friday was his worst round as a professional at a non-major. His previous worst score was a 78, which he recorded at the 1999 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and 1996 TOUR Championship.

• One more shot and Tiger would have carded an 80 for just the fourth time in his career. Woods has recorded three rounds in the 80s on the PGA TOUR as an amateur or professional: 85 (15 over) at the 1995 U.S. Open as an amateur; 81 (10 over) at the 2002 British Open as a pro; and 80 (8 over) at the 1994 Arnold Palmer Invitational as an amateur.

• As a professional, Tiger had never missed a cut in the first four months of the season (January, February, March or April) prior to Friday. The earliest he had missed a cut in a season was the 2005 HP Byron Nelson Championship (May 13, 2005).
