It will be interesting to see how much players learned in 24 hours. Thursday was the first tournament round for PGA Tour players at Aronimink and there is a learning process. The green complexes are severe and the more local knowledge the players attain, the more it should be reflected in scoring. So many factors affect scoring: wind, heat, rain but at least in theory, scores should be lower as the tournament progresses and players have a better handle on course intricacies
The par 3, 17th hole slapped the players around on Thursday, we'll find out if they learned their lesson on Friday. The 17th was the hardest hole on the course giving up just a single birdie the entire round.. The edges of the green are shaved and any missed shots on the left trundle down to the hazard. The hole has to be respected and the miss has to be on the right hand side, not the left. Tiger Woods missed on the left and made double.
Jim Furyk could achieve a milestone this week. If he makes the cut on Friday, Saturday will mark his 1,500th round on Tour. Justin Leonard could also join the select 1,500 group by making the cut and playing the weekend..
Dustin Johnson showed how to play the par 5 9th but few other players will be able to duplicate that on Friday. He reached the 608 yard, up hill hole in two and then two putted for birdie. Bo Van Pelt also reached in two and made birdie but few players possess the strength to reach in two.
