Round 3 Notes: THE TOUR Championship

Sep. 25, 2010
By John Bush, PGA TOUR staff

• Due to expected inclement weather, the final round will begin with twosomes off of the first tee at 9:00 a.m.

• Current FedExCup projections: 1. Jim Furyk, 2. Matt Kuchar, 3. Dustin Johnson, T4. Luke Donald, Charley Hoffman, 6. Paul Casey, 7. Steve Stricker, 8. Jason Day, 9. Retief Goosen, 10. Ernie Els

Jim Furyk, No. 11 in the FedExCup Standings, 67-65-70 202, -8, 1st

• Jim Furyk followed up a 5-under-par 65 on Friday with an even-par 70 to take a one-stroke lead over Retief Goosen and Luke Donald heading into the final round of THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola. He is looking for a career season-high third victory of the 2010 season.

• Furyk entered THE TOUR Championship as the No. 11 seed. He was ruled ineligible for the first Playoff event at The Barclays for missing his Wednesday pro-am tee time. Had he competed at The Barclays, Furyk would have needed a top-3 finish there to have been seeded No. 5 at THE TOUR Championship and a top-45 finish to have been seeded No. 10.

• Furyk is in a five-way tie for 2nd with seven top-10s at THE TOUR Championship in 12 prior starts. Vijay Singh leads with 12, while Furyk is joined by Davis Love III, Scott Verplank, Tiger Woods and Ernie Els with seven.

• Furyk's leads heading into the final round on the PGA TOUR in 72-hole and 90-hole events:

NOTE: * 90-hole event ** 54-hole event

• Furyk has hit 43 of 54 greens this week, best among the 30-player field. He is third in Fairways Hit, despite hitting just 50 percent for the second consecutive day (7 of 14).

Retief Goosen No. 17 in the FedExCup standings, 71-66-66 203, -7, T2

• Retief Goosen, who won THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola in 2004, carded a 4-under 66 on Saturday to move to 7-under for the tournament, just one shot behind tournament-leader Jim Furyk. It was his 15th round in the 60s in 23 overall rounds at East Lake GC.

• Goosen has four top-4 finishes in six starts at THE TOUR Championship (3-2003, 1-2004, T4-2005, 4-2006).

Luke Donald, No. 7 in the FedExCup standings, 66-66-71 203, -7, T2

• In his fourth start at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola, Luke Donald will enter the final round just one stroke behind Jim Furyk. He enjoyed his best finish at the event in 2006 (T5). Donald is T2 despite ranking T16 in Fairways Hit, finding just 19 of 42 (45.2 percent).

Geoff Ogilvy, No. 12 in the FedExCup standings, 66-67-72 205, -5, 4th

• Geoff Ogilvy posted a 2-over 72 on Saturday to fall to 5-under through three rounds in his fourth start at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola (best finish was T16 in 2009).

• The seven-time PGA TOUR winner carded his career-low round on TOUR with an 8-under 62 during the third round of THE TOUR Championship in 2007 (finished T17).

Nick Watney, No. 28 in the FedExCup standings, 71-74-63 208, -2, 8th

• Nick Watney birdied nine out of his last 11 holes en route to a 7-under 63 (the best round of the week) -- including setting an East Lake Golf Club back-nine record with a 7-under 28. He ties the overall 9-hole score at East Lake, set by Tiger Woods during the second round in 2007, as well as the low-nine hole score of the season.

• Watney's nine birdies over an 11-hole stretch are the most par breakers in his career and the most at THE TOUR Championship since 1990 by any player (Elias Sports). He enjoyed one stretch with six consecutive birdies (Nos. 8-13), equaling the best birdie-streak of the season (six players, most recently Luke Donald at The Barclays/R4).

• Watney's previous-best round at East Lake was a second-round 1-under 69 en route to a T13 finish a year ago, his only other start at THE TOUR Championship.

Paul Casey, No. 5 in the FedExCup standings, 66-71-69 206, -4, T5

• Currently No. 5 in the FedExCup standings, a victory this week would guarantee Paul Casey (T5) the 2010 FedExCup. Casey and Charley Hoffman (7th) are the only two players who began the week in the top five who are currently in the top 10 on the leaderboard.

• Paul Casey is one of 10 first-timers at THE TOUR Championship, joining Charley Hoffman (7), Jason Day (T9), Kevin Streelman (T9), Ryan Moore (T12), Bo Van Pelt (T17), Jeff Overton (28), Ryan Palmer (29), Martin Laird (30). They are hoping to join Chad Campbell (2003) and Bart Bryant (2005) as the only players to win THE TOUR Championship in their first start.

• With a solo 2nd, Casey could pass Furyk as having earned the most money in a TOUR season without a win.

Year Player Money Rank Money
2009 Furyk, Jim 7 $3,946,515
2007 Garcia, Sergio 9 $3,721,185
2008 Allenby, Robert 11 $3,606,700
2005 DiMarco, Chris 7 $3,562,548
2002 Toms, David 4 $3,459,739

2001 Singh, Vijay 4 $3,440,829
2010 Casey, Paul 10 $3,283,194 (through BMW Championship)

Matt Kuchar, No. 1 in the FedExCup standings

• Current FedExCup points leader Matt Kuchar is making his first start at THE TOUR Championship. Through 54 holes, Kuchar is 4-over and T23. He is currently projected to finish second in the point standings.

Phil Mickelson, No. 10 in the FedExCup standings

• Defending champion Phil Mickelson bounced back from a 2-over 72 on Friday with a third-round 2-under 68 to move to T9. Tiger Woods finished second in 2000 to record the best finish by a defending champion at THE TOUR Championship. Should Mickelson finish in a three-way tie for second or better this week, he would become the top-ranked player in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in his career.

• Phil Mickelson had never made a bogey at one of East Lake's par-5s in his entire career until that streak came to an end with a bogey on the par-5 ninth hole on Saturday. Coming into this round he had played 34 par-5s at East Lake without a hole played over par, tying the third most par-5 holes played at a course without a bogey. Mickelson has played 36 par-5 holes at Forest Oaks Country Club and TPC Boston without a bogey (Elias Sports).
