MORE INTERVIEWS: Viking Classic transcript archive

BILL HAAS: Playing at home, we play very similar turf to this in South Carolina, Bermuda grass, and maybe just used to playing on that coming here. These greens are Bermuda greens. I play on bent at home, but these are about as good as it comes when it comes to Bermuda grass. It's the best I've ever seen them here.

I think the guys that are shooting good today are probably when they hit a good putt, they seem to go in. They roll pretty true.

Q. Tell us about your round. I don't know much about it. Did you make a lot of putts?

BILL HAAS: I made a couple. I made a two-putter for a birdie on 5, and I had a tap in for birdie on 4. And I was 2 under all the way to 15, when I made all pars. Then birdied 15, the par 3, from about ten feet, and then I chipped in on 17. After a bad tee shot, I got pretty fortunate to miss the green short but over the water on 17 and then chipped that in. And then 18, I had a good distance, knocked it on in two, and made a 30-footer for eagle at the last.

Turned a 2 under, which would have been happy with a 2 under with the breeze blowing, but turned 2 under into 6 under on the last four holes. I feel fortunate to have shot a good score, and hopefully tomorrow I can make a few more putts.

Q. Did the wind get you?

BILL HAAS: Wind didn't get me, but I hit two good shots, had about 225 at the front and 235 to the hole maybe, something like that. But I knew it was into the wind. So it would slow my 3 wood down I thought, if I hit it good, I could probably get it there but wouldn't go over. Just worked out to be a good number.

Q. That pin was in the front and you hit the middle of the green?

BILL HAAS: I hit the middle of the back, made about a 35-footer down the slope.

Q. Got to be a great feeling walking off.

BILL HAAS: I was just trying to two-putt it really. Just trying to get good speed and lag it down there. It curled in the left side, so it was barely moving. I hit the right speed and was fortunate a little.

Q. And this wind keeps going, what do you see happening the rest of this week?

BILL HAAS: They won't be good. The greens are going to get baked out, baked out in a good way. They'll become hard and fast and very difficult to hit, especially if you don't hit it in the fairway off of the tee. So the scores won't continue to (inaudible). 6 under is a great score, but I would have said, starting today, if I could hit 3 or 4 under every day, it will be good. I don't think you'll see scores as low as they have been in the past, but you never know. Wind needs to keep blowing.

Q. What aspect of your game right now are you most happy with?

BILL HAAS: Probably just I've got an idea how the swing feels right now. It seems to work a little bit. I don't feel 100 percent comfortable over the ball. Sometimes that helps you, and you're not as aggressive, and you hit it in the middle of the green to two putt. That's kind of what I did today. I was just kind of hanging in there at two on the last few holes to make a few in there.

Right now I'm just being patient. My brother-in-law, my sister's husband, is on the bag just for the week. So we're enjoying it out there and taking this week. Maybe that will work out for us.

Q. What do you think it will take for you to win the golf tournament here?

BILL HAAS: You've got to putt it. Like I said, the greens are good, and they're going to be tricky on the weekend just because they'll get hard and fast. You're going to have to be good with a flat stick. If you're patient on the greens you can't run them by. They can go five, six feet by pretty easy. So you have to be patient and hopefully make a few and take advantage of the easy holes.

Q. Your in-laws are good at helping you read the putts, are they?

BILL HAAS: Yeah, he's helping me out. He knows how to play. We're having a good time out there.
