FedExCup wrap-up: BMW Championship, Rd. 1

LEMONT, Ill.. -- Here's a quick look at the latest FedExCup projections and implications following the first round of the BMW Championship:

Who's in trouble
These players started this week inside the top 30 but are currently projected to finish outside the top 30, which is the field size for the Playoffs finale, THE TOUR Championship:

J.B. Holmes 24 37 Needs to finish 51st or better; round of 77 left him solo 68th
Rory McIlroy 29 40 Needs to finish 27th or better but he's currently tied for 64th
Top-five watch
Here's how the top five in points going into the BMW Championship fared in Thursday's first round:
1. MATT KUCHAR Can't do much better than grabbing the lead with a 64
2. CHARLEY HOFFMAN No letdown here -- Monday's champ got in red numbers with a 70
3. STEVE STRICKER In good shape at 1 under but bogeyed last two holes
4. JASON DAY Round of 72 left him tied for 34th; needs top-7 finish to stay in top five
5. LUKE DONALD Englishman shot 68 to tie for sixth; needs fourth or better to stay in top five
The top five in the FedExCup points standings is important, since the top five going into THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola control their own fate in regards to winning the FedExCup.

30 THE TOUR Championship Nick Watney remains on the bubble where he started the week after shooting 70 that left him tied for 12th. But Vaughn Taylor has climbed a spot to No. 31 in his quest to get to East Lake and assure himself of a home game at next year's Masters.
