Weather: Sunny, with comfortable temperatures and low humidity. High near 80, with NW winds at 6-12mph.
Lift, clean and place was not in effect during the second round of The Barclays (first round only).
Jason Day, No. 28 in FedExCup points
Jason Day posted a second-consecutive 4-under 67 to move to 8-under 134 and the 36-hole lead at The Barclays. He currently holds a one-stroke lead over Kevin Streelman and Vaughn Taylor.
Day is playing in The Barclays for the third straight year, finishing T31 at Ridgewood Country Club in 2008 and T12 last year at Liberty National.
Day entered The Barclays with eight consecutive made cuts, dating to his first-career victory at the HP Byron Nelson Championship and additional top-10 finishes at the AT&T National (T9) and the PGA Championship (T10). With 14 made cuts in 20 starts, Day has risen to No. 28 in the FedExCup standings.
The last Australian to win The Barclays was Wayne Grady in 1989.
Day has held the 36-hole lead one time previously on the PGA TOUR, eventually finishing T2 at the 2010 Puerto Rico Open. This is the sixth time this season he has led after one of the first three rounds.
Kevin Streelman, No. 102 in FedExCup points
Streelman posted an 8-under 63 to move to 7-under 135 after the second round of The Barclays. His round consisted of several highlights, including a closing-nine (Nos. 1-9 after beginning round on No. 10) 6-under 29, capped off by a 43-foot, 6-inch birdie putt on the par-4 ninth hole to complete his round.
The course record at Ridgewood CC is a 62, set by Hunter Mahan in the first round at the 2008 Barclays.
Streelman also had a 63 in his first start of the year, closing the final three rounds with 63-64-70 to finish T10 at the Bob Hope Classic. His career-low round was a 62 at the 2008 Travelers Championship (R3).
Streelman jumped out of the gate this season with three top-10 finishes in his first eight starts (T10-Bob Hope Classic, T3-Puerto Rico Open, T7-Arnold Palmer Invitational), but has played on the weekend just six times in his last 15 starts, with a T18 at last week's Wyndham Championship his only top-25 finish.
Coincidentally, Streelman has entered the 2008 and 2009 Playoffs ranked No. 102.
FedExCup
The following players entered the week ranked No. 101-125 in the FedExCup standings. Here's a look at their standing through two rounds of the Barclays:
|
Stewart Cink, No. 54 in FedExCup points
Cink has opened with back-to-back rounds in the 60s at The Barclays -- 67-69=136 (-6). He has opened with back-to-back rounds in the 60s at The Barclays only once before, in 2002 when he shot 67-69-71-78 to finish T5. In 2008, the only other year the event was held at Ridgewood CC, Cink finished T38.
Cink's best finish in 10 previous starts at The Barclays was a T3 in 2001.
Cink has posted three top-10 finishes in 19 starts so far this year, with his last coming at the Memorial Tournament, where he finished T8. He has had at least four top 10s in every season of his PGA TOUR career since his rookie year in 1997.
A good finish would certainly help Cink's chances of returning to the finale of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, THE TOUR Championship at his home course of East Lake Golf Club for the fourth consecutive year. Cink has finished 22nd, 20thand 28th in the first three installments of the FedExCup.
Tiger Woods, No. 112 in FedExCup points
Woods posted a 2-over 73 on Saturday to fall to 4-under 138 through two rounds. A birdie on the par-4 18thhole, his ninth hole of the day, moved Woods to 8-under through 27 holes, but he closed with a 4-over 39 to fall to T14.
Woods has hit 26 of 28 fairways through the first two rounds (13 of 14 each day) to lead the field. That is a far cry from his last two starts:
PGA Championship 71st (out of 71)
WGC-Bridgestone Invitational 79th (out of 80)
Woods is currently No. 112 on the FedExCup points list. He needs between a 50th and 57th-place finish this week to move into the top 100 and advance to next week's Deutsche Bank Championship.
Woods has progressed with each start at The Barclays, missing the cut as an amateur in 1994, followed by T43 (1997), T16 (2001), T13 (2003) and T2 (2009) finishes.
The Barclays is one of only three PGA TOUR events in which Woods has made at least three starts yet failed to record a victory (Northern Trust Open -- 11 starts, Waste Management Phoenix Open -- 3 starts). It is also the only PGA TOUR Playoffs event that he hasn't won.
John Senden, No. 99 in FedExCup points
Senden carded a 2-under 69 to move to 6-under 136 (T4). He finished T7 in 2005 at The Barclays, the best of his nine starts at the event. He finished T31 at The Barclays in 2008, held at Ridgewood CC.
Making his 24th start of the year, Senden is still seeking his first top-10 finish. Among his 14 previous made cuts is a season-best T11 finish at the World Golf Championships-CA Championship.
Playing well this week is imperative to Senden's chances of advancing in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. He currently sits No. 99 on the points list, with the top 100 advancing to next week's Deutsche Bank Championship.
Heath Slocum, No. 50 in FedExCup points
Defending champion Heath Slocum (67-71) sits 4-under (T14) through the second round in his attempt to become just the second player to successfully defend a title at The Barclays (Ernie Els, 1996-97).
The Greater New York Chapter of Crohn's and Colitis Foundation is one of the TICKETS Fore CHARITYTM participants at The Barclays, and for every birdie Heath Slocum makes at The Barclays, the tournament will donate $150 in his name to the Greater New York Chapter of Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America in honor of the estimated 150,000 children in the United States who are affected by Crohn's and Colitis. Slocum, who suffers from ulcerative colitis, has seven birdies through the first two rounds (R1 -- 4, R2 -- 3).
Webb Simpson, No. 94 in FedExCup points
Second-year TOUR pro Simpson carded a 65 (-6) on Friday to move into contention once again at The Barclays. Simpson was the 36-hole leader at the 2008 Barclays (by two strokes), where he eventually finished T8. Simpson jumped from No. 85 to No. 41 in the FedExCup standings, thanks to that finish at The Barclays, and was the leading rookie in the FedExCup standings for 2008 (No. 62).
Today's 65 matches Simpson's low round of the year, which he has done twice before: during the final round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial (T33) and the final round of last week's Wyndham Championship (T12).
Padraig Harrington, No. 55 in FedExCup points
Harrington, who missed the cut at The Barclays when it was played at Ridgewood Country Club in 2008, has posted 69-68 to put himself in contention at the first Playoff event.
Harrington has been stellar at The Barclays, with a victory in 2005 and runner-up finishes in 2004 and 2009 among his six previous starts here. He finished just one shot behind champion Heath Slocum last year despite a second-round 75 at Liberty National.
Ben Crane, No. 12 in FedExCup points
Crane followed up his opening round 67 with a 70 on Friday to stay in contention at The Barclays. He has not had much success at the event, missing the cut in three of five starts. His best finish came in 2006, when he finished T29. At Ridgewood Country Club in 2008, he shot 72-75 to miss the cut by four.
Crane won his third TOUR title earlier this year at the Farmers Insurance Open, one of five top-10 finishes in 2010. He has been in the top 10 of the FedExCup standings in all but eight of the 33 weeks of the Regular Season.
Crane has never advanced to THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola since the inception of the FedExCup. He played in only nine events in 2007 due to lower back problems. He finished 59th and 61st in the FedExCup in 2008 and 2009, respectively.
Scott Piercy, No. 125 in FedExCup points
Piercy followed up an opening-round 67 with a 5-over 76 on Friday to miss the cut by one shot, eliminating him from the Playoffs. He was in great shape at 4-under-par through 31 holes, but posted a triple-bogey 7 on the par-4 fifth hole, known as the "Five and Dime" hole (the shortest par-4 on TOUR at 291 yards). He closed with a double bogey on the par-4 ninth hole for the 76.
Piercy was the only player to move into the top 125 in the final FedExCup standings at last week's Wyndham Championship, with a T8 finish moving him from No. 140 into the final spot at No. 125.
Miscellaneous Notes
The cut came at even-par 142 with 72 players advancing to the weekend.
The second-round leader/co-leader has gone on to win 13 of 36 times in stroke-play events in 2010, with the most recent being Arjun Atwal at the Wyndham Championship.
FedExCup points leader Ernie Els has two rounds of even-par 71 this week, making the cut on the number at even-par 142. He has led the FedExCup standings for 22 consecutive weeks.
Steve Stricker, who is the only player to have played in all 50 rounds in the four-year history of the PGA TOUR Playoffs, has been a model of consistency this week. He posted 1-under 70 each of the first two rounds of The Barclays, with two birdies and one bogey on each day.
