MORE INTERVIEWS: Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial transcript archive

JOHN BUSH: Brian Davis joins us here in the interview room at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Brian 2 under par 68 today. It just wasn't quite enough.

Just comment a little bit about your play and also about the tournament as a whole this week.

BRIAN DAVIS: Yes, I mean it's been a great week. Obviously, if you would have said at the start of the week after 3 missed cuts in a row, you are going to finish second you would be delighted. Obviously, I had a chance today. I just couldn't get over the hump. Zach played great today. He won the tournament, I didn't lose it. Obviously, it's been a couple of times now where guys have shot low to beat me and maybe I need to go a bit lower next time.

JOHN BUSH: 3 under par through seven holes for you, but the rest of the way, you just couldn't get it going.

BRIAN DAVIS: Yes, I had a couple of chances and didn't really hit it close. Divot in the fairway, and just couldn't make a go at the pin. Just didn't quite hit good enough shots. I had a great chance just before they blew the horn and then we want back out, and I missed an eight to 10 footer which obviously would have put the pressure on. I didn't hit a great par putt, but two great sand saves following that. And then I thought I holed that one on 17 just to put some pressure on him, I don't know how it missed. I was giving it the walk.

Obviously, once he hit it close, I knew I had to try to hole it off the rough, went for it, it didn't go in and for me it was done.

Obviously, I'm delighted to have had another good week, and prove to myself again. Obviously, you know, right now I'm disappointed. But my hats off to Zach for getting it done today.

JOHN BUSH: What was your yardage and the club on 18?

BRIAN DAVIS: I hit a really good tee shot, it drifted in the wind a bit. I had a bad lie. I needed to hole it. It's not a case of (unintelligible), I needed to hole it. I took the aggressive shot, the aggressive club and I hit sand iron to about 128 yards.

But, you know, out of that rough you just don't know what the ball is going to do. Unfortunately once it didn't go in, I try not to break a leg finishing.

JOHN BUSH: Questions?

Q. What was it like to be in contention and feeling the pressure and then have those delays like that especially the last one on 17 before your putt?

BRIAN DAVIS: Yes, obviously it's a distraction. It's a distraction for every one. We deal this with a lot on TOUR. It's not exactly the first time. It is just one of them things, it just wasn't my day. I put myself at it today and had a chance, it didn't just quite fall my way, but I got to try to take the positives from it and obviously get ready for next week.

Q. What positives are you going to take from it?

BRIAN DAVIS: Well, I played great, I didn't have many bogeys this week. I just came off 3 missed cuts. There is a lot of positives to take from it. I have had a good week on and off the golf course. Obviously, well documented about the children yesterday coming out. Just all of those things have been good. The icing on the cake would be to be lifting the trophy fee right now. That's the ultimate goal. If I keep knocking on the door, I am going to get one soon.

Q. Do you think nerves were a factor coming down the stretch? I know you've obviously been in this position before, particularly the shots to the bunker on 14, 15 and 16, did nerves play into that at all?

BRIAN DAVIS: Shots out of bunker?

Q. Into the bunker on 14, 15 and 16.

BRIAN DAVIS: I don't know how to answer that really. I was leading the tournament. I was out there in the tournament. It takes a lot nerves to tee off on the first tee, let alone try to win a golf tournament.

I proved to myself today that I stood in there and it took a great champion to beat me. Zach is a Major winner. You don't get to win a Major winner unless you can finish the job coming down the stretch. The way I looked at it, you know, I hit a shot a shot, the best, and then I hit two great bunker shots to give myself a chance to win. Unfortunately, Zach birdied 17 which gave him a 2 shot lead so it put me under more pressure to make 3. Ultimately, once the tournament was done then obviously it was a bit of a weird feeling walking up 18, knowing you can't win now. It's just one of those things. I will bounce back and the next time get the job done.

Q. Brian, you seem to be close to winning a tournament, do you feel that way, and after everything you've been through in your career do you feel like fate kind of owes you won?

BRIAN DAVIS: A few people have said that. I don't look at it like that. It's one of them things. I said XM outside, I remember when they were all jumping on Herrington's back a couple of years ago in Europe because he finished runner up nine times. What are they doing now? He is one of the best players in the world.

So you got to keep knocking on the door and the door will open. No doubt there will be a few wins.

But for me personally this year coming out, I struggled early with the grooves. It was a bit or miss up until about March. Obviously, I was starting to get a bit worried for things.

I'm delighted with the way I bounced back. I'm fairly happy where I am right now obviously. I want the win and ultimately that's what will make me happy.
