MORE INTERVIEWS: Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial transcript archive

JOHN BUSH: We would like to welcome Jeff Overton into the interview room here at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

After a 7 under par 63, Jeff, runner up in two of your last four tournaments, including last week at the Byron Nelson, just a continuation with that momentum. Just talk a little bit about your round and your play right now.

JEFF OVERTON: About four or five weeks ago I picked up a new caddy Eric (Larson) and I did some work on the range with a new driver, the TaylorMade SuperFast, I have just been killing it. I gained four and a half miles per hour my ball speed.

It enables me to get my ball down there within 100 yards and really take advantage of some of these par 4's.

I was able to do that today. I hit a bunch of good iron shots and just been riding that wave. It's been great.

JOHN BUSH: Even par through 7 holes and then the floodgates opened, just comment on that last 11 hole stretch.

JEFF OVERTON: I've been hitting it really well, and I hit the first six holes or so, all of the greens pretty much. I missed a couple. I made about a 7 footer for par on No. 7 there. I was like, common, it's playing pretty easy right now, let's make a birdie or something. I had a perfect club. I hit a 7 iron like five feet on the next hole, and the next thing I knew the floodgates just kind of opened.

Q. You get on 18, and you had that ball right there on the edge of the mulch, talk about that and about not letting the round get away and doing something crazy right there. It was a good save right there.

JEFF OVERTON: Yes, I was very fortunate. I had just enough of an angle on the left side of the green there. I knew if I held on to a pitching wedge I could run something up there, especially with the back pin and everything. I was lucky enough the thing came off great. I had a fun round and it was the lowest, I think, yet of my career out here.

Q. Can you describe for a layman what increased ball speed means especially on a course like this?

JEFF OVERTON: Assuming that everything, the spin and everything is the same, which it actually was, but almost even better, it gained a little launch and less spin actually. I gained about 15 yards. Four and a half miles per hour, with about 15 yards whenever I hit the ball good. I guess that's why they call it SuperFast. I don't know what the whole point is of their names, they call the drivers. But it's definitely added a lot to my game.

I know even Allenby, at the PLAYERS, he picked it up the first week right out of the gates, and he was hitting that thing very nicely as well.

Q. The best back 9 in 11 years, and also it's your 5th consecutive round under 70 here; why?

JEFF OVERTON: I love the golf course. It's a great place. I didn't realize I shot 60's every time last year. The place sets up very well for my game. Especially somebody hits a high draw, a lot of the holes set up very nicely for that, other than maybe hole No. 5. I'm always going to hit it in the left rough there and try to get up and down.

But the course sets up great. The greens are just perfect. I love greens that really roll well, and you hit good shots and you are going to get rewarded because the greens are nice.

Q. You mentioned the greens and the course set up, but obviously the weather is pretty calm out there. You are not going to see that very often. Just talk about taking advantage of that and just how much of an advantage is it to post something low this early?

JEFF OVERTON: This morning I played the few first holes, and made par after being right in the middle of the fairway on 1.

I hit a wedge in on 2. I'm just, common, man, the course, if there's ever a time it's there to be had today.

I scraped around a par on No. 7 there. After missing a few 10, 12 footers for birdie. The next thing I knew I made a good one off the back fringe on 10 and stuck a 5 iron in there on 11, after hitting it in the trees. It was, you know, it was one of those things that everything kind of clicked and it went together like a puzzle almost.

JOHN BUSH: Let's go through the card. You took care of a couple of holes for us. No. 8, you hit which club?

JEFF OVERTON: 7 iron to five feet right next to the hole.

10, I hit a pitching wedge, 3 iron down there, and then hit a pitching wedge. It kind of got unlucky, and it rolled through and made like a 20 footer from the fringe.

11, hit a driver down the right side, and it caught a tree limb and it kicked it back right 40 yards to the right, and I hit a stinger 4 iron underneath of it to like 200 and I hit a 5 iron to seven feet and made that.

13, I just got done missing a five footer on the previous hole for birdie after driving it like 80 yards. I was kind of into the zone. I hit an 8 iron right at it. It came up just a little right and about 15 feet up the hill and made that.

14, I hit a drive right down the left. It actually covered the first bunker, it got a really bad kick down in the bunker, and I hit a pitching wedge to about a foot.

16, I just had gotten done missing about a 10 footer on the previous hole. I was kind of like feeling good and hit an 8 iron just left of the hole and didn't quite catch the slope. I was able to make a really nice putt there, probably 18 or 20 feet.

17, I hit a perfect 3 iron right down the middle. I hit a gap wedge in and it doesn't get much better with the angle that I had and I actually hit a bad shot probably 12, 13 feet right below the hole and made that.
