INSTRUCTOR'S CORNER: Ed Brill, head instructor at Tour Academy Hilton Head, analyzes the playing conditions this week:
Yesterday, I talked about putting, and some numbers jumped out from the players who finished. Lee Janzen had 24 putts Friday, Alex Cejka had 25 putts and last week's runner-up, Brian Davis, had 22 putts. Folks, that is a lot of one-putt greens and maybe some putts from the fringe that don't officially count as putts.

A quick story, I played golf at the ultra beautiful Colleton River Plantation, just off of Hilton Head Island, yesterday. I challenged myself to see how I putted from under 6 feet. Jim Furyk was perfect at Harbour Town for four rounds. I was perfect from 6 feet and under and still had 29 putts.
I feel that I was perfect because I was really focused on making those shorter putts. Yes there was one three-putt in there and no chip-ins or hole-outs from the fairway. Challenge yourself to better putting. It will be the easiest and quickest way to get better.
If Davis had 26 putts Friday, which would still be quite good, he only shoots 70 and would be several shots back. Practice that flat stick folks; if it wasn't this important, I wouldn't be writing about it so much.
