KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Players will have to keep their focus while playing the par-3 11th hole during the second round of the SBS Championship. The green sits directly above Honolua Bay and the water will be crowded with surfers on Friday. Forecasters are predicting 30 foot waves, which should make for spectacular scenery. It would be easy for a golfer to watch the surfers, suffer a lapse in concentration and have a wipe out of his own on the scorecard. ...
You can find Sybi Kuchar walking every step of the Plantation course again on Friday. Matt Kuchar's wife refuses to accept any type of rides on the hilly layout. The terrain is so severe even players get a ride from the fourth tee to the fairway. Not Sybi. She is a fitness fanatic and uses the tournament as an aerobic workout. Sybi is also an accomplished tennis player. ...
No course on TOUR is more affected by the wind than the Plantation Course at Kapalua. The island wind can completely changes the layout, even making the 660-yard par-5 18th reachable in two shots. It's also makes it difficult for PGA TOUR officials to cut hole locations. Officials were generous in the opening round with few holes cut on the edges of greens. Expect a similar set up on Friday with possible winds gusts expected.
INSTRUCTOR'S CORNER: Todd Jones, head instructor at the TOUR Academy, will provide a daily tip this week to help improve your game.
The first round of the SBS Championship saw ideal conditions for scoring. The winds were down, which allowed the players to attack. Lucus Glover led the way with two eagles and six birdies. En route to his 7-under 66, Glover hit 93 percent of his fairways (second in the field), 88.9 percent of his greens (T5 in the field), and took only 28 putts (T3 in the field). Look for the low scoring to continue in the second round as the wind is forecast to be calm.
While watching the players go low in primetime, pay particular attention to the Aim Point feature used on the greens during the telecast. Aim Point illustrates the true break of the putt. Great putters will read plenty of break into the putt, while average putters tend to consistently miss low because they under read the putt. To make more putts use the adage -- it you miss, miss high and long -- and establish your own "aim point" accordingly.
