SONY OPEN AT HAWAII: Transcript archive

JOHN BUSH: We would like to welcome Chad Campbell into the interview room here at the Sony Open in Hawaii after a 6 under par 64.

Chad, a rough start yesterday, 3 over par through 7 rounds, but it's been smooth sailing ever since, can we get your comments if we can?

CHAD CAMPBELL: Yes, like you said, I got off to a tough start there yesterday but, you know, fought back. The conditions were tough yesterday and tough today, really windy out there.

Just knowing that I needed to stay patient I felt I was playing well coming in. So I was able to hit a lot of good shots today and make a few putts.

JOHN BUSH: Let's go through those birdies starting on No. 10.

CHAD CAMPBELL: 10, I hit driver, 60 degree wedge from 50, 55 yards, I just didn't hit a very good shot, to like 15, 20 feet, birdie.

15, I hit 2 iron, 7 iron to about 15 feet and made that.

17, was 7 iron out just off the edge of the green. It was probably only 12 feet.

18, hit driver just through the fairway and then had 7 iron into about probably 15 feet for eagle and 2 putted.

8, 3 wood, 8 iron to about six feet.

9, was driver, 4 iron to probably 30 feet and 2 putted.

Q. You always do well here it seems like, or you have good rounds here in particular?

CHAD CAMPBELL: Right, I enjoy the course. It's one of my favorite courses we play all year. It's got a lot of character to it. I just love playing it. Like I said, it's one of my favorite ones all year. You get to start here, and it's warm weather, and it's cold at home. So it's a great spot to be. I love coming here.

Q. Did what happen last year have any impact on what's happening here?

CHAD CAMPBELL: No, not really. Obviously, I was very disappointed, especially I was just saying how much I love coming here and playing the tournament, playing the golf course. It was really disappointing last year, you know what happened, that's one thing for sure I probably won't do it again, I had plenty of reminders this off season. I always ask them where they were last year. (Laughter.)

Q. Did you have a bunch of practice in the off season, what did you do coming in?

CHAD CAMPBELL: You know, it was pretty cold at home actually. I was able to get out and practice a little bit. I went to Palm Springs for three days before we flew over here, so that was nice to be able to get some warm weather and practice a little bit. I felt like I practiced quite a bit in December when the weather allowed it in Texas and the trip to Palm Springs helped out a lot.

Q. A couple of pretty good shots that went in there, what did you learn from those two years?

CHAD CAMPBELL: I don't know, kind of the same with, I guess with any tournament, you got to stay patient, especially around this golf course. It's hard to hit fairways out there with all of the crosswinds. So, you know, if you get balls that bounce into the rough, stay patient because if you are in the rough it's hard to hit the ball close and make birdies. So just stay patient and try to do as well as you can.

Q. Have you had any groove issues yet?

CHAD CAMPBELL: Not really. My irons I played last year, a majority of them were already conforming to this year, so obviously the wedges weren't, but it was a little bit different. Out of the fairway I haven't seen that much difference with the wedges. Obviously out of the rough it's a little bit harder to control them.
