Second-Round News & Notes
With inclement weather expected in the area on Sunday afternoon, PGA TOUR officials moved the start of Sunday's final round up to 8 a.m. with the final groups going off at 9:15 a.m.
Veterans Fred Funk and Kenny Perry used a blazing start by Perry on Saturday to grab a share of the 36-hole lead. The pair opened the second round with six straight birdies by Perry to earn a share of the 36-hole lead and finished the day with a better-ball score of 18-under-par 126. They'll begin Sunday's final round tied with 2009 champions Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly, who posted another 9-under-par 63 on Saturday.
Since the event moved to Naples in 2001, the second-round leaders/co-leaders have won five of those nine events, including the last three. Kelly and Stricker led by one after 36 holes in 2009 and prevailed by the same margin over three teams to claim the $750,000 first prize ($375,000 for each).
If Funk and Perry win on Sunday they would be the oldest team to win this event. Funk is 54-years-old and Perry is 50. They each competed on the Champions Tour in 2010 although Perry did not make his debut until October and played in just two events. Funk won the 2010 JELD-WEN Tradition for the second time in his career and finished sixth on the money list with over $1.4 million. The only other member of the Champions Tour to be on a winning team was Scott Hoch in 2008 when he teamed with Perry.
Birdies were certainly plentiful on Saturday with the three teams -- Funk/Perry, Chris DiMarco/Anthony Kim and K.J. Choi/Mike Weir each posting 10 birdies. Co-leaders Kelly/Stricker had nine for the day.
It's a family affair this week for Fred Funk and Kenny Perry. Each of those players has their sons serving as caddies. Perry's son, Justin, has served as his caddy most of the 2010 season, but Funk's son, Tyler, is getting a head start on the 2011 season when he'll handle those duties for his father.
Should Perry and Funk emerge with the win on Sunday, it would be Perry's third title in the last six years with the third different player. He teamed with John Huston to win in 2005 and with Hoch in 2008.
Kelly and Stricker will be looking to become the third team to defend a title in the 22-year history of the event. The previous teams to defend were Brad Faxon and Scott McCarron in 2001 and Jeff Sluman and Hank Kuehne in 2006.
Sunday's format will be a Scramble where each player will hit a drive on each hole and the best drive is selected. Each player then plays a second shot from the spot where the selected drive lays and the best second shot is selected. The process is completed until the hole is completed.
The Shark Shootout 5K race winners on Saturday were Kristen Kostka in the Women's Division and Jesse Armbruster in the Men's Division. Among the finishers was a pair of PGA TOUR employees working the event -- Rules Official Jon Brendle and Scorekeeper Montana Thompson.
Sunday's final round will be televised on NBC Sports from 4-6 p.m.
