The last time Fergus was in the winner's circle was at the 2007 Ginn Championship, where he beat Mark O'Meara and Hale Irwin by one-stroke in his 72nd start on the 50+ circuit.
World Golf Hall of Fame member Bernhard Langer set a new tournament record after carding an 8-under par 64 in the final round. Langer broke the record set in 2008 by Joe Ozaki and later matched by three players. After kicking off the year with a win at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship, Langer has finished in the top-10 in all five starts.
With his fourth-place finish this week, Joey Sindelar, who made his Champions Tour debut at last year's Cap Cana event, has now posted a top-five performance in his last three starts. The native of Horseheads, N.Y., tied for second at the Toshiba Classic and tied for fourth at the AT&T Champions Classic earlier this month.
All six former Masters Champions in the field are headed back to Augusta National in two weeks. This week at Punta Espada Golf Club, Langer tied for sixth, Sandy Lyle tied for 70th, Larry Mize tied for 3rd, O'Meara tied for second, Gary Player finished 75th and Craig Stadler tied for 15th.
Also heading to Augusta National is Australia's Greg Norman, who tied for 36th this week in his first Champions Tour appearance outside of the majors. He'll compete at the Shell Houston Open on the PGA TOUR this coming week.
Fergus earned a check for $315,000 for winning, and also picked up 315 points in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup race. Langer picked up 80 points with his tie for sixth place and remains the season-long point's leader in the Schwab Cup competition with a total of 697 points.
New to the top-10 this week is O'Meara, who is now tied for sixth place with Mike Goodes after earning 168 points with his runner-up performance. At the end of the official season, the player with the most Schwab Cup points will earn a $1 million annuity.
Fergus' one-stroke victory in the final round means that all six official events on the Champions Tour in 2009 have been decided by a single stroke or in overtime.
There were three eagles in the final round, compared to Saturday's second round, which yielded 10, and one on Friday. Five players posted bogey-free rounds on Sunday, compared to just one on Saturday and three on Friday.
The most difficult hole of the week was the par-4 No. 3, which played to a stroke average of +.269 and landed just 13 birdies. The field scoring average measured in at 71.97 on Sunday and 72.16 for the week.
Defending champion Mark Wiebe ended the week with an even-par 72 and finished tied for 36th.
