Tiger Woods opened with a 1-under 70 on Friday and has been in this position before. Earlier this summer at the Buick Open, his 1-under opening round had him tied for 95th, and he went on to win the tournament. However, he's in a far worse position here at the Deutsche Bank Championship this week. At the Buick Open, his opening round was played in the afternoon, and his second round was played in the early morning, when the golf course was most susceptible to low scores. He capitalized by playing the first five holes in 6 under, a luxury he won't have at TPC Boston today. Tiger tees off at 1:10 p.m. ET this afternoon, and a golf course traditionally plays more difficult in the afternoon sun.
Jim Furyk began his day with four consecutive birdies at Nos. 1-4 to begin his round. On Saturday, he'll begin on the back nine and faces a much more difficult test. When a player starts on the front nine, TPC Boston lends itself to a fast start. But the back nine offers a formidable opening stretch. The flip side of that coin is if Furyk should stumble at the start, he can regroup by starting his second nine at the 374-yard first hole.
What can we expect out of first-round co-leader Steve Stricker? This is just the third time he's held at least a share of the 18-hole lead on the PGA TOUR in his career. Stricker led the 1993 RBC Canadian Open after one round and tied for fourth, and earlier this year, he was part of a three-way tie with Tim Clark and Woody Austin in Fort Worth before going on to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Stricker loves this TPC Boston course, and in the last three years, his worst finish on the inviting layout was a tie for 13th last year.
