EXPERT PREVIEW: PGA TOUR Network on-site correspondent Doug Bell previews Friday's second round:
Soft greens and fairways has made for very favorable scoring conditions at Congressional Country Club, and right now, it's a ball-striker's paradise. Several players, including Anthony Kim (62), D.A. Points (64), Steve Elkington (65), and Stuart Appleby (66) all enjoyed their best rounds of the year on the PGA TOUR. The big question is, who among those guy's will follow up with more magic on Friday?

Partly cloudy Temp: 81 high/62 low Sunny and warm. Winds light from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph. |

For Kim, it's a matter of finally being healthy. He won't stop talking about how good he feels, and the fact he can now work the ball from left to right like he did during his magical 2008 season. He complimented his caddy Eric Larson, and said the two were totally in sync, in picking out proper target points during Round 1. He is anxious to play on Friday afternoon at 12:50 ET. His teacher Adam Shriver is also part of his entourage this week, and looks almost as confident as his prized pupil.
Stuart Appleby has been one of the most perplexing stories this year missing the cut in five of his last six events. Stuart told me he's been working on a slower tempo on his backswing, and also a new putting stroke in which he's trying to copy some of what Tiger does with his takeaway, and it's taken him longer than he ever expected. He could not recall the last time he hit 17 of 18 greens like he did in Round 1.
Steve Elkington still possesses one of the prettiest swings around and appreciates it when people remind him of that. He hasn't played on the weekend since the Shell Houston Open and told me he likes Congressional because," You don't have to think to much around here, the course shows you exactly what you have to do." The 46 -year-old major champion still has no sponsor on his golf bag.

Tiger Woods (64) opened the tournament with back-to-back birdies, holing a 5-foot putt at the first hole and a 50-footer at the second. The last two times Woods began tournaments with back-to-back birdies were THE TOUR Championship and BMW Championship in 2007. He won both events. |
