ZACH JOHNSON: Fourth in FedExCup points (1,800 after reset)
After a year in 2008 in which he did not advance beyond the first PGA TOUR Playoffs event, Johnson used a victory in last years Fall Series at the Valero Texas Open to gain momentum for 2009. He began the year quickly with a final-round 5-under 65 at the Sony Open in Hawaii to outlast David Toms, finishing with a two-putt birdie for a two-shot victory over Toms and Adam Scott. Johnson has eight top-10 finishes in 2009 and is one of six players to hold the No. 1 spot in the FedExCup rankings at any point this season. Johnson led the FedExCup standings in weeks two through five and then again in weeks 19-22. Johnson has had great success in the state of Georgia with three of his career victories coming there (2004 BellSouth Classic, 2007 AT&T Classic and the 2007 Masters Tournament). In three previous appearances at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola, Johnson has one top-10 finish in 2007 with a T2. It came in spectacular fashion after he fired a course-record 60 in the third round.
Quick analysis
The steady man from Iowa has put together the second two-win season of his career. Johnson has been extraordinarily consistent with eight top-10s in 2009, and he finished solo fifth last week at Cog Hill. He's another who could be peaking at just the right time -- Johnson tied for second at East Lake in his last appearance in 2007. -- Helen Ross
