There has to be a baker's dozen players who still think they can win headed into today's final round, thanks to the struggles down the stretch by the lead group and runs from some veterans on the back nine. Third-round leader Justin Leonard, for one, told me he wasn't happy to see all the momentum swings and to have let so many players back into the chase. After needing only 52 putts through his first two rounds, he took 30 putts on Saturday and let a 5-shot lead after 5 holes get away. An accurate putter Sunday could make the difference for the cagey veteran.
If there's anyone headed to Sunday with some momentum, it's a group of three veterans, two of whom have still never won on the PGA TOUR. When I talked with Mathias Gronberg after his 66 that included a back-nine 31, he thought he'd be three shots back headed to the final round. Instead, Gronberg is tied for the lead and in the final group. Nick O'Hern told me he was very proud of a couple of great par saves on Nos. 17 and 18 that ended up getting him to within one of the lead, and Carl Petterson, back up to what he told me was his "fighting weight" of 215 after dropping 20 pounds last winter, hasn't had a bogey in 33 holes.
Also, beware of a guy who's striking the ball brilliantly, and knows why he's missing putts. Will MacKenzie wasn't even close to a bogey Saturday, hitting all 18 greens, but said that his problem of moving his head on his putts reared its ugly head again. He made just 6 of the 18 birdie tries. Expect him to have a lot more opportunities today, he leads the field in Greens in Regulation, missing only six all week.

Justin Rose is searching for his first victory on the PGA TOUR in his 149th start. Rose has led or shared the lead heading into the final round three times, the last coming at the 2007 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. |
