Golf certainly isn't a game of "perfect," but Justin Rose told me that's still what he's in search of as he seeks his first PGA TOUR victory this weekend, teeing off in the final group today. As soon as he expressed his desire for perfection, fellow Brit and now fellow Orlandoan Greg Owen leaned over his shoulder and said, "Good luck with that." The pair both played extremely free and easy during the first two rounds, but things will now tighten up a bit, especially for Rose, for whom so much has been expected ever since that great finish at Royal Birkdale 11 years ago. He's won overseas, but not yet in his adopted homeland as he approaches 30 years old.
Chris Riley began the week like more than half of the field, outside the magic No. 125 on the money list. At No. 126, he's next in line to get his TOUR card for 2010, but knew that Tim Herron and Chris DiMarco, who were behind him on the money list, were ahead of him on the leaderboard. But other than that, he knew very little while playing his second round in relative anonymity on the Palm Course Friday. He asked me where the cut line was when he finished, and expressed relief that he really had no idea where he stood. This weekend at Magnolia, the veteran will know exactly where he stands on nearly every hole. Whether that's a good thing or not will be known in 36 more holes.
If someone from the pack wants to break out and chase the leaders, it could come midway through the round. The 8th and 10th holes at Magnolia are long but birdie-able par 5s, and with short par 4s at Nos. 7 and 11, there's a great chance to make a 3- or 4-under-par run through the turn that could catapult someone up the leaderboard.

This marks Justin Leonard's 10th career 36-hole lead/co-lead, but his first since the 2005 FedEx St. Judes Classic. He was able to turn three of his previous nine second round leads/co-leads into victory, including the 2005 FedEx St. Jude Classic. |
