Curtis Strange jumped into contention at the 1988 Memorial Tournament by firing a course record-tying 64 on Saturday in course conditions that were similar to the Ryder Cup set-up at this same venue only months earlier. Strange held off two-time Memorial Tournament champ Hale Irwin, who chipped in on No. 18, by backing up his 64 with a 67.
"To play the way I played the last two days on this golf course, which is a very, very demanding course, and to win against as good a field as you can probably get is very, very rewarding," Strange said. "When the heat is on, you find out what you're all about."
Strange lifted the Memorial Tournament trophy afterward and it can now be seen at the World Golf Hall of Fame as part of nearly 200 Strange artifacts currently on display within the museum.
