PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - The water surrounding the 17th green at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass certainly has claimed its share of victims.

During this year's first round of THE PLAYERS Championship, though, players and fans alike had to also deal with the warm temperatures as temperatures crept toward 90 degrees.

Tournament officials were prepared for the muggy weather. Hydration stations are located throughout the course along with first aid stations to assist with any medical issues that may arise during the round.

Approximately 60 volunteers donate more than 150 hours of first aid and medical services during the event. Most issues are able to be treated on-site -- however, serious cases are sent to local hospitals for treatment.

Tournament Medical Services Director Dr. Jeffrey Snowton advises all to keep an eye on the rising temperatures.

"Decreased energy, fatigue, headaches and dizziness could be signs of dehydration," he said. "Your body needs water for respiration, perspiration, and to clean out toxins as well as for many other processes."

More notes

• When Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson reached the 17th hole, fans packed the hills around the hole, hoping to catch a glimpse of the top-two players in the world. Most times during the round, though, the hole is an excellent place to watch a lot of golfers. Not only can spectators see the action on No. 17, they can watch the players approach on the 16th as well as teeing off on No. 18.

Nicholas Thompson, who is making his second career start in THE PLAYERS, had the shot of the morning. His tee shot landed 4 inches from the pin. He tapped in for birdie.

• Since 1977, THE PLAYERS has donated over $31 million to North Florida charities, including a record $3 million during last year's event.

• THE PLAYERS has always been known as a fan-friendly event. This year, spectators can purchase a Stadium Radio for $10 so they can listen to the live PGA TOUR Network and GOLF CHANNEL broadcasts.

• Fans with dreams of hitting a great shot on No. 17 can try their luck on a mini-replica of the hole. The hole is 1/3 the size of the real thing and the hole placement mirrors what is out on the course. Fans shoot for prizes as well as having their shots filmed and sent via e-mail. A putting green and a souvenir photo area are also a part of the fan experience.
