PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- He started Twittering because wanted to keep up with his buddies. Kyle Petty, for one.

The NASCAR star was riding his motorcycle cross-country from North Carolina to Washington and "tweeting" along the way. So Lexie Love encouraged her father, Davis, to join the social networking site and see what his good friend Kyle was doing.

"Lexie is my Twitter-er manager," Love said with a smile.

Davis Love III began using Twitter on Tuesday and already has more than 300 followers. (Click here for his Twitter feed.) He's exchanged messages with Petty, who begins his annual Chick-fil-A Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America on Friday.

"I was just (twittering) starting out to see Kyle's pictures because he's with all my buddies," Love said Wednesday. "What a great way to promote a charity event like that. I'm catching them on Sunday night. I fly to Salt Lake and I start riding Monday.

"Hopefully I miss my 7 o'clock flight."

If he does, that means Love is in contention for his third PLAYERS Championship title. And he's already started reaching out to his fans on Twitter -- Love posted a picture of Fred Couples at the 17th hole while they were playing a practice round on Wednesday.

Love also gave a Twitter shout-out to his son Dru and the Frederica Academy golf team which came back after an overnight rain delay to win the Georgia state 2-A title. Love had taken Tuesday off to watch them and returned to Ponte Vedra on Wednesday morning.

During his practice round, Love caught up with Stewart Cink -- the PGA TOUR's champion Twitter-er -- in the 16th fairway and joined his group.

"We've been talking about it the whole way," Love said as he signed autographs and walked to the first tee for another nine holes. "Stewart's got 150,000 people following, and I was amazed that I have like 300 -- it basically just hit this morning."

Love said he plans to Twitter next week while he's riding with Petty in the event that raises money for Victory Junction, a year-round camp in Randleman, N.C., that serves chronically ill children aged 6-16.

Among those joining Love and Petty are former NASCAR driver Harry Gant and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker. The ride begins Friday in Stevenson, Wash., and makes eight overnight stops before ending in Greensboro, N.C.

Victory Junction was created to honor the memory of Adam Petty, the son of Kyle and Patty Petty, who was killed in a practice round before the race in New Hampshire in 2000. The ride, which began in 1995, has raised more than $12 million for chronically ill children.
