FROM THE TROOPS This GI Citation was given to Hope in 1941 by President Harry S. Truman. Inside the box are the signatures of one million troops. He visited the troops overseas and entertained them in every war from WWII to the Persian Gulf War.
During wartime, Hope had one rule -- neither himself nor other performers were allowed to cry when visiting wounded soldiers. He said it was their duty to provide laughs and cheer up them up. According to Hope, he only broke his own rule once. In 1943, while visiting an army hospital in Italy, he stopped by the bedside of a soldier who had been in a coma for two months. When Hope arrived, the young man suddenly opened his eyes and said, "Hey, Bob Hope! When did you get here?" Hope had to leave the room to hide his tears, but later returned to give the solider his Purple Heart medal.
