All 12 U.S. Presidents Cup Team caddies wore San Francisco Giants baseball jerseys with their players' last names on the back during Wednesday's practice round at Harding Park.
The idea came from U.S. Captain Fred Couples and his good friend, John Wood, who is Hunter Mahan's caddy and a Sacramento native. Wood proposed the idea to Couples three months ago.
Their original idea was to have each player/caddy duo choose any Bay Area sports jersey of their choice. But when the Giants organization first caught wind of it, they were so eager to be involved, they took care of all of them.
Wood, a big Giants fan, was the one to decide which 13 Giants greats would be picked and which Giants great best fit each U.S. Team player. Below are the players/caddies and the jerseys they are wearing.
Hunter Mahan/John Wood: No. 22 (Will Clark, John Wood's favorite all-time player)
Phil Mickelson/Jim MacKay: No. 55 (Tim Lincecum-Wood's idea behind this was because Mickelson pitched batting practice for minor league teams, and Lincecum is the Giants' ace pitcher)
Justin Leonard/Brian Smith: No. 44 (Willie McCovey, who is Leonard's caddy's favorite player)
Tiger Woods/Steve Williams: No. 24 (Willie Mays)
Sean O'Hair/Paul Tesori: No. 11 (Carl Hubbell)
Fred Couples/Joe LaCava: No. 36 (Gaylord Perry)
Steve Stricker/Jim Johnson: No. 25 (Bobby and Barry Bonds)
Jim Furyk/Mike Cowan: No. 48 (Pablo Sandoval)
Lucas Glover/Dan Cooper: No. 30 (Orlando Cepeda)
Kenny Perry/Justin Perry: No. 4 (Mel Ott)
Stewart Cink/Frank Williams: No. 23 (Bobby Thomson)
Anthony Kim/Eric Larson: No. 27 (Juan Marichal)
