Week 22 Power Rankings: Mexico Open

The Nationwide Tour heads south of the border this week to Mexico for the Mexico Open. Last year, the Nationwide Tour hosted the 50th Mexico Open at Tres Maria Golf Club in Morelia, Mexico. This year, the event will be played at El Bosque Golf Club (par 71) in Guanajuato, Mexico.

El Bosque is the second longest course on the 2009 schedule at 7,568 yards. The longest course on Tour is Kinderlou Forest Golf Club/South Georgia Classic at 7,781 yards.

Since the 2009 Mexico Open is played on a course never played before on the Nationwide Tour, it makes it difficult to predict who will play well. The yardage says this will be a long hitter's course, but there's no telling what the conditions will be like.

Rank Player   Comment Fabian GOMEZ Gomez has four top-25s and is 33rd on the money list. He lost a playoff to Michael Sim earlier this year at the BMW Charity Pro-Am. The Argentine may feel more comfortable this week since he's in a Spanish-speaking country. Garth MULROY Mulroy's win earlier this year was at the South Georgia Classic (Kinderlou Forest), so he obviously knows how to tame the longer courses. Paul CLAXTON Claxton also played well at Kinderlou, but, more importantly, he's a Tour veteran; he knows how to stay in his comfort zone while traveling to foreign places and how to prepare for a course he has never seen. He has five top-25s in '09. Matt EVERY Heading into last week, Every had made eight cuts in a row. Despite not making the cut, he has been one good round away from winning on a couple of occasions this year. Jose DE JESUS RODRIGUEZ Last year, he tied for seventh in the Mexico Open. Earlier this year, he tied for 38th at the Mayakoba Classic at Riviera Maya and fourth at the Mexican PGA Championship.
