Oct. 9, 2009
Starting with the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, golf becomes an Olympic sport. The current format calls for individual 72-hole stroke-play events for men and women, with 60 players competing in each event.
The qualifications that have been recommended by the International Golf Federation are relatively simple. The top 15 players in the Official World Golf Ranking at a to-be-determined date will be eligible, regardless of the number of players from a given country. Beyond the top 15, players would be eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top 15.
Taking those qualifications, here is an unofficial list of players who would be eligible based on the current world rankings at the time of Friday's announcement.
