In Palmer's six appearances on Ryder Cup squads ('61, '63, '65, '67, '71, '73), he played 32 matches and earned a 22-8-2 record. He was 6-3-2 in Singles, 9-3-0 in Foursomes and 7-2-0 in Fourballs, winning 23 total points for his country.
Palmer, who served as a playing captain in 1963 and again as captain in 1975, never lost a Ryder Cup. Though the United States dominated the competition from the late 1940s to the early 1980s, the ever-competitive Palmer wasn't content to settle for a win.
"My first Ryder Cup in 1975, Arnie was the captain," Hale Irwin said. "Arnie was still a pretty good player back then and we had a strong team. Those were the days when the U.S. team was going to win, it was just a matter of how much (they would win by). But that wasn't good enough for Arnie, who always showed his competitive nature and drove for excellence in everything that he did. In one of the team meetings, he was very serious in that he didn't want the other team to make a point. It was emphatically driven into us, 'I don't want them to make a point.'"
