Palmer joins the Champions Tour (1980s)
Palmer joined the upstart Champions Tour in its first year in 1980 and was instrumental in the early growth of the 50-and-over circuit. He won five Champions Tour majors, beginning with his official Tour debut at the 1980 PGA Seniors' Championship.
In one of many tributes to Palmer, the Arnold Palmer Award is given to the Champions Tour money leader annually. He didn't hang up his spikes on the Tour until 2006, when he made his final appearance at the 2006 Administaff Small Business Classic. He withdrew after four holes in that event but played out the round for his fans.
