There is no word on when Phil Mickelson will resume his playing schedule on the PGA TOUR, but there is good news for him off the golf course.

Mickelson's mother, Mary -- who was diagnosed with breast cancer less than two months after his wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer also -- underwent surgery last Wednesday at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. According to Mickelson's Web site, the surgery went well.
"[My mom] was very brave," Mickelson said. "We should get her pathology in a week, and we are all optimistic. It meant so much to me and Amy to be there with her."
Mickelson, who missed the British Open for the first time in his career since 1993, added that Amy, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in May, was also doing well and that the cancer has not spread to her lymph nodes. The couple is just awaiting one last test result that will help determine her treatment plan.
"The waiting and wondering sometimes can be the most difficult part," Mickelson said. "But she has a very positive attitude and has handled all of this with her usual grace."
Mickelson last played at the U.S. Open, where he made an emotional run at the silver trophy before eventually finishing in a tie for second. Shortly thereafter, he announced he would likely miss the British Open and wasn't sure when he would be back.
As for the outpouring of support Mickelson has received, his entire family has been moved by it.
"We could not have done this without the help of our family and friends. I don't know what we would do without them," Mickelson said. "We continue to be overwhelmed with the support of our extended group of friends and family. The prayers, notes, articles, e-mails, texts, and packages get us through every day. We feel the support all around us. Our gratitude is hard to put into words."
