PREVIEW: PGA.com Interactive Producer T.J. Auclair previews Saturday's third round from Turnberry:
What a crazy 138th Open Championship it's been so far at Turnberry. First we had a 59-year-old, former five-time champ in Tom Watson tied for the 36-hole lead with much younger Steve Marino -- an alternate who got in the field last Sunday -- at 5 under. On the other end of the spectrum, we had Tiger Woods missing the cut for just his fifth time as a professional and just for the second time in a major. You try to figure this one out.
Moving day will no doubt be fun to watch as the third round rolls on Saturday. Can Watson keep it going? Will someone make a charge? Could that someone be Sergio Garcia at 1 under? Does he finally win that first major?
Based on the forecast, it appears that anything could be possibe. Turnberry is supposed to stay dry this weekend with winds increasing as the day wears on.
It's anyone's ballgame, but Watson is the clear-cut, sentimental favorite.

This marks the 41st time Tom Watson has held the 36-hole lead/co-lead on the PGA TOUR, the most recent being the 1998 AT&T Pebble Beach where he eventually finished T9. The last time he led/co-led after 36 holes and went on to win was the 1987 Nabisco Championship. |
