PORTO SANTO, Madeira Islands (AP) -- Michael Hoey of Northern Ireland made six birdies in a 5-under 66 Friday to take a three-stroke clubhouse lead in the second round of the Madeira Islands Open.

The former British amateur champion made a strong start, picking up birdies in four of his first six holes go out in 32. He collected another birdie before recording a bogey but recovered to make another birdie on his next-to-last hole.
Hoey has totaled 7 under, three strokes ahead of overnight coleaders Damien McGrane of Ireland, winner of last year's China Open, and Carlos Rodiles of Spain.
Hoey came through the European Tour qualifying school in his sixth attempt last year and tied for second at the Africa Open in January.
