Reigning FedExCup champion Vijay Singh may miss the next five weeks after he undergoes knee surgery, according to a report in the Honolulu Star Bulletin.

Singh will compete in the winners-only Mercedes-Benz championship, where he is paired with defending champion Daniel Chopra in the first two rounds, but will not island hop to Oahu for next week's Sony Open. It will be the first time Singh has not played in the tournament since 2002.
According to the Star Bulletin, Singh withdrew from the Sony Open earlier this week, giving no particular reason. However, the Star Bulletin cites several sources who confirmed Tuesday that the Big Fijian will have knee surgery on a torn meniscus. The 2008 FedExCup champion could be out for as long as five weeks.
In the absence of Tiger Woods, Singh proved to be a dominating force -- winning not only the FedExCup but also the final World Golf Championships event of the year, two consecutive Playoffs events and Woods' end-of-year Chevron World Challenge.
With the world's No. 1 player still in recovery from his knee surgery, and Singh soon to follow suit, the start of the '09 season looks to be wide open for the taking.
