• Of the 59 players who finished their rounds, five players (Hale Irwin, Chip Beck, Fuzzy Zoeller, Loren Roberts, Andy Bean) are currently tied for the opening-round lead, the most after Round 1 in the five-year history of the event. In the first four events, two players have been tied for the Friday lead twice. In 2005, Irwin and Dana Quigley both had 6-under-par 66 and last year, Bruce Vaughan and Morris Hatalsky matched 7-under 65s on Friday.

• In the pro-junior competition, the team of Fuzzy Zoeller and Sydney Burlison of Salinas, Calif., are the leaders at 10-under-par 62. This is Burlison's final junior event before she heads off to Stanford where she will compete for the Lady Cardinal golf team this fall. Zoeller/Burlison lead Nick Price and John Catlin of Carmichael, Calif., by two strokes.

• Only two of the top 12 players on the current leaderboard played their rounds at Pebble Beach (Andy Bean/66 (-6)/tied for first, Mark McNulty/68 (-4)/tied for eighth) Friday. Last year on Friday, nine of the top 11 players on the scoreboard played their rounds at the Del Monte Golf Course on Friday.

• Irwin's 66 was his best starting round in this event since he opened with 66 in 2005 and went on to win the event. Roberts' 66 Friday was his seventh consecutive par/better score in the tournament. Zoeller's 66 marked the first time he's started this event with a round in the 60s.

• Hale Irwin, Loren Roberts, Fred Funk and Phil Blackmar were the only players to complete bogey-free rounds Friday.

Lon Hinkle replaced Jimmy Powell in the field after Powell withdrew late Thursday afternoon. The former winner of the 1979 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am who made his second appearance on the Champions Tour this year (Dick's Sporting Goods Open), opened with an 11-over 83 at Pebble Beach Friday.
