Langer also becomes the fourth player to defend a title this year. Earlier, Tom Watson (Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am), Jay Haas (Principal Charity Classic) and R.W. Eaks (Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn) also accomplished the feat.
Langer also moves back atop the money list with the win, increasing his 2008 earnings to $1,992,573. He now leads Jay Haas by $158,247. Langer will not play in this week's AT&T Championship in San Antonio but will return for the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Sonoma, Calif., the following week.
The Charles Schwab Cup race remains tight. Fred Funk finished in third place and remains in the lead with 2,544 points. However, Bernhard Langer's victory moves him within 84 points of the lead (2,460), while Jay Haas, who tied for sixth, is third, only 97 points behind Funk (2,447). Eduardo Romero is fourth with 2,032 and John Cook is fifth with 1,619.
With only two events remaining and 1,132 points available for the winners, only seven players have a chance to win the 2008 title. In addition to the current top five, Jeff Sluman (1,469) and Scott Hoch (1,453) remain in contention although each is long shots. Loren Roberts, the 2007 winner, cannot win this year's crown.
Dave Stockton posted his best finish since 2004 when he finished tied for fourth on Sunday. The 66-year-old Stockton also tied for fourth at the 2004 SBC Championship (now the AT&T Championship).
In the race for the final spots in the 2008 Charles Schwab Cup Championship, Joe Ozaki remains at No. 30 with $605,403. However, Bob Gilder's tie for sixth moved him within $2,280 of Ozaki with one full-field event remaining. Jim Thorpe, the defending champion of the event, may be unable to defend his crown. Thorpe missed this week's event with a bad back and is currently 36th on the money list with $491,122. Thorpe trails Ozaki by $114,281 and will almost assuredly need a win or a second place and some help in San Antonio.
Hale Irwin's streak of 13 consecutive appearances at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship officially ended on Sunday when he finished tied for 35th. Irwin would have needed a victory and another high finish to possibly continue the streak. However, with just one event remaining, he is 60th on the money list with $249,227.
Two more players reached the coveted $1 million mark in season earnings on Sunday. Andy Bean and Denis Watson became the latest to do so bringing the 2008 total to 15. Bean finished tied for sixth and Watson tied for fourth.
Hal Sutton finished tied for 23rd in his Champions Tour career at 3-under-par 213. He earned $14,620. When he earned his first check on the PGA TOUR in 1982, Sutton earned $6,075 at the Wickes-Andy Williams San Diego Open (tied for 12th).
The field averaged 71.964 for the tournament, including 73.230 on Sunday. The most difficult hole was No. 5 at 4.267 (+.267), while No. 15 was the easiest at 4.711 (-.289).
