SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Defending champions Butch Baird and Bobby Nichols, along with the teams of Al Geiberger-Jimmy Powell and Bruce Devlin-Larry Mowry, all fired bogey-free 8-under-par 64s Monday to share the first-round Demaret Division lead at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa.
The Demaret Division (ages 70+) consists of 16 two-man teams competing in a 36-hole better-ball competition. The Demaret Division kicks off a week full of Champions Tour action at the 31st annual Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in Savannah.
Baird and Nichols, who claimed the Demaret Division title last year with a two-day score of 15-under-par 129, carded the only double eagle of the day on the par-5 No. 4. Devlin and Mowry opened with five straight birdies en route to shooting the lowest nine of the day with a 7-under-par 29 on the front.
The Demaret Division wraps up play Tuesday with 18 more holes of better-ball competition. The winning team will split $80,000 out of a total purse of $372,000.
After pro-ams on Wednesday and Thursday, all-team competitive play resumes at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf on Friday morning with the first rounds of the Raphael team division (36-hole unofficial competition for ages 50-69) and the Legends team division (54-hole official competition for ages 50+).
The winning Raphael Division team will split $120,000 out of a total unofficial purse of $428,000 while the Legends Division team will take home $450,000 official prize money of a $2.6 million purse.
