Woods has all the wins, all the love for World Golf Championships

Feb. 28, 2008

Tiger Woods captured his 15th official World Golf Championships title on Sunday at the Accenture Match Play Championship, meaning the world's No. 1 player currently holds all three World Golf Championships trophies simultaneously. He defends his title at the CA Championship, an event he has already won six times, March 18-23, and then will also be looking for a seventh title at the Bridgestone Invitational.

In 2003, Woods became the first player to win all three World Golf Championships during his career. Now he is the first to hold all three trophies at the same time. If he wins the CA Championship next month, he'll head to the Bridgestone Invitational looking for a season-sweep of the World Golf Championships.

"They're [World Golf Championships] exactly what they were meant to be, and that's putting the best up against each other more often than just the four majors and THE PLAYERS," said Woods after his win on Sunday. "I think that's why we as players and competitors love them, love the idea that we can go head-to-head more often. Most of the guys play in Europe or some other part of the world, and we don't get a chance to buck heads. And now we can do it more frequently, and I think it's been a huge success.

Darren Clarke is the only player other than Woods to have won multiple, official-money World Golf Championships titles, but his two wins are dwarfed by Woods' tally of 15. In this 10th-year anniversary of the series, Woods' dominance is clear. He has won 55.6 percent of the 27 official World Golf Championships played since 1999 and has now earned $19,882,000 in official money during the series. He also has 24 top-10 finishes in his 26 starts (he has only missed the 2001 Accenture Match Play Championship), and with upcoming title defenses at the CA Championship and Bridgestone Invitational -- both at courses he has had considerable success at -- that tally is likely to grow.

"As I said, I've always enjoyed playing these championships, even though they've been all around the world," said Woods. "And for some reason, I've had success all different places. I can't say it's the venues. Maybe I just enjoyed playing the fields, just like I enjoy playing major championships."
