Expert picks: RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey GC

Editor's note: PGATOUR.com has tried to make our experts work a little harder when they make their picks each week. The favorite can be anyone in the field, although Tiger Woods can only be used seven times during the year. Sleepers can't have won in 2008 or had a top 10 in their last five starts. A sleeper can't be ranked in the top 30 in the field, either.

Pick: Jim Furyk
I'm going with the obvious pick this week. Furyk has won the last two RBC Canadian Opens and will make it a three-peat. Aside from Furyk's recent history of winning in Canada, he also enters the tournament north of the border coming off two consecutive top-5 finishes, including his tie for fifth at last week's British Open. It's not often that Furyk goes an entire TOUR season without a win, which is what he's got going so far. In fact, since 1995, Furyk has only gone winless over the course of a season twice.

Sorry, had to go with the easy pick this week. Jim Furyk has won two years in a row at this tournament. Plus he's finished inside the top 5 in his past two starts, including last week's British Open. Sounds like the perfect combination for a win at the RBC Canadian Open, which would be his first victory on TOUR since his win at the same event last season. This pick can be summed up in two words -- long overdue.

There but for a third-round 77: The RBC Canadian Open's defending champion came thisclose to really contending at Royal Birkdale, which might get things moving for him. Can't believe he hasn't won this year? Neither can he. He needs this headed into the next few weeks, but he might have to one-up Anthony Kim to do it.

A season without at least one victory isn't a good one for this guy. But perhaps he finally can locate his comfort zone north of the border, where he wins with regularity. Coming off a strong performance in the British Open should boost his confidence this week.

After finishing tied for fifth at the Open and seeing Paddy hold onto his trophy, I think Furyk is anxious and ready to do the same--even if it is a different course this year.

His ball-striking was sublime at Royal Birkdale, but his putter tripped him up. I'll give him a pass for the green gaffes -- Kim's been a steady putter since turning pro, and the British winds made every 4-footer a knee-knocker last week. If Kim hits the ball at Glen Abbey like he did at the major, he'll win in a runaway.

I was torn this week. Should I go with Jim Furyk, who is bidding for his third straight title in Canada or Anthony Kim, the wunderkind who is seeking his third win of the season. Both played well at Royal Birkdale. Call it a hunch, but I'll go with Kim.

The sentimental choice is Mike Weir, and we like his chances still; but perhaps Ames, the legalized Canadian from Trinidad & Tobago, is the man to halt the 50-plus year drought for Canucks. A good putter on big greens is a dangerous man, and if Ames can keep the ball in play, he'll put himself in contention.

His tie for seventh at the British Open didn't get much play but mirrored his season, solid and under the radar. Best finishes have come on tough tracks; Sawgrass, Royal Birkdale, Colonial. Glen Abbey fits the bill for the man who is quietly 25th in FedExCup points. With due respect to Mike Weir, this Calgary resident is the Canadian with the best chance to win this week.
