| Course origins |
On September 22, 2007, Sedgefield Country Club's famous Donald Ross golf course reopened following a major 10-month, $3 million restoration project. This has transformed the golf course back to how Ross intended the course to play, while taking into consideration the changes in golf technology and turfgrass development over the last 50 years. The restoration of the Ross 1926 classic design has positioned Sedgefield Country Club as one of the premier private country clubs in America. |
Sedgefield Country Club is one of North Carolina's oldest and most historic clubs. The original inn/clubhouse was built in 1925 and was completely renovated from 1992-1993. Renovation of the inn permitted the members to maintain this historic Tudor building while combining all of the conveniences of today's modern country clubs. The clubhouse is 48,000 square feet and features the original main lobby.
|
Sedgefield Country Club is best known for its 18-hole, Donald Ross-designed golf course. Designed in 1925, Sedgefield has played host to many major amateur events in the Carolinas, as well as hosting the Great Greensboro Open for over 50 years. On May 8, 1953, the Atlantic Coast Conference was formed at Sedgefield Country Club.
|
The course does not play long off the tees, but must be played from the green back to the tee. Emphasis must be put on ball placement in the fairway in order to get the appropriate angle to the green. The greens at Sedgefield are very undulating and slope from back to front, with many falling off the edges into collection areas. |

While the PGA TOUR is heading back to Sedgefield CC for the first time since the mid 1970s, the Nationwide Tour held the Nike Greensboro Open and the Buy.com Greensboro Open there from 1998-2000. We culled through the stats from that three-year event and compiled the following rankings:
| 2000 Rankings |
| Most Difficult Hole |
 |
The par-4 477-yard 9th This hole, which was one of the 50 hardest holes on the Nationwide Tour in 2000, requires a long uphill tee shot near the right edge. Tee shots left of center will require a strategic stroke over the restored cross bunker short of the scalloped green. The hole played 478 yards in 2000 but will be 428 yards in 2008. 2000: 0 eagles, 33 birdies, 266 pars, 129 bogeys, 13 double bogeys, 4 others. |
| Easiest hole in 2000 |
 | The par-5 489-yard 14th It's tough to compare this hole in 2000 to how it is currently in 2008, since it was a par 5 when the Nationwide Tour last played it and will be a 501-yard par-4 hole this year. Now it has a wide fairway with two center line bunkers that create a deceptive approach shot to the skyline green. A restored pot bunker challenges the approach shot from the right side. Perhaps it was because the hole produced 46 eagles and 265 birdies in 2000 that it now has a lower par value. 2000: 46 eagles, 265 birdies, 122 pars, 10 bogeys, 2 double bogeys, 0 others. |
