The are those who might say that Rocco Mediate had his 15 minutes of fame when he took the hobbled Tiger Woods to the 91st hole at the U.S. Open last year. Mediate, though, is too entertaining and too talented not to bear watching in 2009. The chronic issues with his back appear to have been alleviated thanks to physical therapist and confidant Cindy Hilfman, who discovered that Mediate had a sacroiliac joint instability. Her treatment turned him from a budding TV commentator back into a golfer. After that upbeat and unpredictable run against Woods at Torrey Pines, Mediate found himself sharing the first-round lead at the Open Championship. He went on to tie for 18th at Birkdale, which turned out to be his best finish the rest of the year. -- Helen Ross
