TOURNAMENT RECAP: The first round went down in history, as Brad Fabel and Jim Gallagher made the first holes-in-one at TPC Sawgrass. Dave Rummells then tied the tournament record for the most successive birdies (six). But it was John Mahaffey who claimed the title as Larry Mize slipped up down the stretch. Mahaffey caught Mize on the 16th hole and passed him on the final hole when Larry missed from 4 feet. "I told Larry I was sorry," said Mahaffey, whose final-round 71 gave him a one-shot victory with 275.
