TOURNAMENT RECAP: The winning score for the second year in succession was 289, as Jack Nicklaus became the first and only player to score a hat-trick of PLAYERS titles. In a wind- and rain-affected event of record-high scores, Mike McCullough's 69 in the third round was the only sub- 70 score during the entire tournament. It was the first time Nicklaus had won a tournament without making a final round birdie. Nicklaus won with a final-round 75. "I didn't win this tournament -- I was just the only one to survive," he said.
