Jeff Overton, currently 122nd on the PGA TOUR money list, underwent an emergency appendectomy Tuesday night at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz. His recovery is going well but it looks extremely doubtful that he will play again this season.
The top 125 on the TOUR money list retain playing privileges for the 2009 season. Overton currently is inside that cut line by just $23,938. He was scheduled to play the final three events of the season in an attempt to better his position.
With only conditional status on TOUR in 2007, Overton earned just more than $1 million and finished 99th on the money list in just 19 starts. This year he had three top-10 finishes in 30 events, but with a share of 10th at Turning Stone Resort Championship and a fifth at the Valero Texas Open in the last three weeks he had climbed back inside the top 125.
Overton felt uncomfortable Monday and delayed his flight to Phoenix but arrived that evening and played nine holes Tuesday at Grayhawk Golf Club in preparation for the Frys.com Open. After that he checked with medical personnel at the course and was advised to see a doctor. Tests were performed and Overton was operated on Tuesday night.
