Montgomerie expecting to return to Ryder Cup

GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) -- Colin Montgomerie expects to return to Ryder Cup action despite his omission from Europe's squad for this year's competition.

Colin Montgomerie is expected to be Europe's captain at the 2014 Ryder Cup.

The 45-year-old Montgomerie has never lost a singles match at the Ryder Cup in eight appearances going back to his 1991 debut but was passed over for a wild-card pick by Captain Nick Faldo after slipping to 93rd in the Official World Golf Rtheankings.

"I do feel I have not played my last Ryder Cup, but I have to get my consistent game back," said Montgomerie, who last won at the 2007 European Open. "It will be harder next time, so I have to raise the bar as well. But I am determined to do that."

Montgomerie could have made the team, but Faldo selected Ian Poulter and Paul Casey as his wild-card choices. The Scot said he had expected Darren Clarke to make the team after he won the KLM Open in the Netherlands last month.

"Always you hope you might get picked because we all know what credentials I can bring to the Ryder Cup, but I think I was even fourth or fifth on the list," Montgomerie said Monday, a day after Faldo announced his team at the Johnnie Walker Championship.

"I think he picked the two players he thought would get the most points. I would not say it's going to be punishment watching them. I will look forward to it -- to see how people react and to learn how I might do it in the future."

Montgomerie is expected to be the European captain when the competition is at Gleneagles in 2014.
